A popular alternative to smoking cannabis flower or vaping are medicinal edibles. Edibles are food and drinks that are infused with cannabinoids. They come in a wide variety of delicious forms and flavors for nearly ever diet and preference. At WCM, we make edibles fresh from our own kitchen with the finest local ingredients. Our kitchen produces everything from beverages mixes, chocolate, confections baked goods and savory snacks. We start with our own flower and all products are triple-tested for crop-to-confection purity and consistency.

WHat you need to know

We are now telling you everything you need to know about this ingestion method. Keep reading for links to some of our favorite recipes for you to try on your own!

Edibles can be consumed for medicinal and soon to be adult-use. Many contain THC, which produces a euphoric effect and may be helpful in treating a wide range of symptoms. Many patients choose edibles because it’s a delivery method that is healthier than smoking. The effects also last longer and there are a variety of products on the market to try. Edibles are also discreet, don’t give off an aroma and can be taken anywhere.

Onset And Ease of Use

As with all ingestion methods of consuming cannabis, start low and go slow. If you are new to edibles, make sure you understand the label on the edible. This means reading how much THC the edible contains and how the dosage is dispensed. If you are making an edible purchasing decision and have questions you need answered, ask your WCM Member Liaison. We will help guide you on how to best begin according to your own personal preferences and use. They are here to help!

Micro-dosing Cannabis

This is very different from vaping or smoking, which gives you an instantaneous effect. Because edibles are taken orally,, the cannabinoids are absorbed into the intestine and processed by the liver. As Leafly reports, edibles that are consumed orally take longer to kick in than other methods. This is because they have to be digested and processed in the gastrointestinal system before entering the bloodstream. If you’ve just had a large meal, it may take even longer for the cannabinoids to affect you, according to Leafly. This might mean up to 90 minutes before an edible starts to work and even longer to reach peak effect.

New to Edibles

If you are totally new to edibles, the Cannifornian recommends starting with a dose of 2.5 or 5 milligrams of THC. In general, a single dose should be no more than 10 milligrams of THC. Remember, tolerance levels will vary – even if you have been a cannabis smoker for years.

Regardless if you are new to edibles or experienced with them, give yourself time. Wait two to three hours before increasing dosage. Or, you can do what the Cannifornian suggests and wait a day and start next time with a slightly higher dose. Then increase it by 5 milligrams or so at a time until you find a level that gives you the desired effect.

Duration

Typically, consuming an edible will provide its intended effect between four to eight hours. Because of its long effect, many enjoy consuming edibles before bedtime to help with sleep. If you’ve never tried edibles before, make sure you have time in your schedule to experience the effects fully. This way you can do so with ease, around people who you trust and are safe.

Potency and Psychoactive Effect

The potency and psychoactive effect will vary on dosage and body chemistry. Even so, many report that consuming cannabis through edibles can be a more intense experience than smoking or vaping. According to Leafly, researchers believe this is because when THC is eaten, it is converted into 11-hydroxy THC. This is particularly effective in crossing the blood-brain barrier, resulting in a more intense euphoric effect.

Symptom Relief

Many people take edibles for longer lasting symptom relief. Edibles may help with a variety of things like chronic pain, depression, inflammation, insomnia, nausea and stress. Other edibles can help with muscle spasms, digestion and PMS.

recipes

If you are new to edibles we recommend buying them from a state-licensed dispensary so the dosage is clear and precise. However, if you are more experienced with edibles, you may want to experiment in cooking with cannabis-infused butter and try one of our favorite recipes to create in your own kitchen.
