Learning About The 7/10 Holiday

Many cannabis enthusiasts know about the infamous April 20 (4/20) holiday and why the plant is celebrated on that day. But did you know about the other cannabis holiday on July 10, or 710? Read upside down, 710 translates to OIL. So you guessed it, this day is when we celebrate all things concentrates and dabs.

Concentrates are potent. They are products made from the cannabis plant that have been processed to mostly keep the cannabinoids and terpenes. Concentrates enable the removal of excess plant material and other impurities. This happens through a solvent or solventless process. It’s considered to be a safer and more consumer-friendly option as opposed to solvents like butane or propane. After the THC or cannabinoid is extracted the result is concentrates, or sticky oils. More commonly referred to as wax, shatter or budder. Concentrates include kief and rosin but they are not considered to be extracts because they are made without solvents.

Not surprisingly, 710 was code to represent smoking cannabis oil or extracts. Weedmaps tells us that 710 garnered the representation of a niche cannabis lifestyle. It is celebrated both by dabbing at a specific time (7:10 a.m. or 7:10 p.m.) on July 10. But the holiday’s origins aren’t as clear as cannabis’ big annual global holiday, 420. There are some reports of the term first appearing on the website Urban Dictionary back in 2010. But the word wasn’t widely tied to or associated with cannabis, hash oil and concentrates until 2011. 

Weedmaps says some sources point to rapper TaskRok of Highly Educated as the originator. This was captured in an interview with The Leaf Online back in 2015. TaskRok says he originally thought of the term in an industry professional chat with Healthstone and BeeHive Oil Clothing. TaskRok also released an album (under his group name Task & Linus) on July 10, 2011, called “The Movement” that has multiple references to dabbing, including a track called “7:10.”

The term became popularity when LA Weekly ran an article titled “710 is the new 420” in July 2013.

It’s true, this publication digs into the background of the 710 origins. If you head on over to this story published back in 2015 and written by Mitchell Colbert, you’ll get a full history of how this holiday came to be. The publication mentions many clues along the way. It wasn’t until Colbert talked with Daniel De Sailles, the owner of Top Shelf Extracts and a founder of The Secret Cup, a “710 community event,” when more information started to come to light.   

TaskRok also said back in 2012 to the online publication, “it doesn’t belong to him — it belongs to the movement. Like 420 before it, 710 is a concept that extends beyond its founders, across time and space, and serves to unite a counter-cultural movement.”

Another publication that agrees with TaskRok being an originator of the 710 holiday is GreenState. TaskRok was quoted as saying, “710 (at least the 710 buzz that has grown today) was started in TinyChat with me (and some friends). They suggested we make a new time to take dabs at as they didn’t really resonate with 420 anymore. I was the one who suggested 710 because it clicked in my head that it spelled oil upside down.”

It was a year earlier, when TaskRok worked with DJ Linus Stubbs to release their album called “The Movement.” As mentioned above, a mock-petition to move the time of 4:20 to 7:10 and appreciate dabbing. It features aptly named songs like “7:10” and “Boil that Oil.”
