There are many ways to enjoy inhalation. You can roll your own joints, pack some of your favorite flower into a glass pipe or bong or choose to consume via a vaporizer. Inhalation is probably the most commonly known method of ingestion associated with cannabis. Otherwise known as smoking or “blazing” – there are many known nicknames for inhaling cannabis.

Are you someone who loves to place the flower up to your nose to fully take in the aroma?

The Nose Knows

It’s often said that the nose knows. Meaning, some people make their purchasing decisions based on if they like the smell of the flower. Cannabis, after all, came from the Hebrew word kneh-bosm, which means aromatic reed, according to GreenState. Where does the smell come from? Terpenes – which can be described as the plant’s essential oils. They give strains their aroma and flavor, as well as provide therapeutic effects. They also differentiate one strain from another.

When you are ready, you can take the bud in your fingers to really inspect the beautiful trichomes and rich coloring. Next grind up your bud, with either your fingers or a grinder, placing it in your delivery method of choice. There are many bongs, bowls and paper styles to choose from.

Remember, puffing from a paper cone or glass pipe, however, will draw smoke and leave a lingering, potent scent. Vaping, on the other hand, causes a vapor that evaporates fairly quickly. While there will be a slight odor, it’s noticeably less than smoking.

In this blog post, we’re going to discuss how you can consume cannabis by inhalation. One of the more popular ways enthusiasts and patients enjoy their cannabis.

Onset And Ease of Use

One of the great things about inhalation is that the effect is instantaneous. You can easily light up and feel the hit immediately. All you need is a lighter and either a pre-roll or bowl for your flower. Make sure you are in a location that is safe and allows consumption.

A flower vaporizer is similar. Make sure you pre-grind your flower, add it to your vaporizer and you’re good to go!

If you are new to cannabis – start low and go slow. If you are smoking or vaping, take one or two puffs. Wait at least 15 minutes before increasing dosage.

Duration

The duration of inhalation will depend on a few variables. This includes how much cannabis you consume, the potency of the strain and of course, your body make-up. Every individual will respond differently to cannabis and how it is ingested. Make sure to talk to your member liaison about THC levels and how they can impact the effect. Most cannabis strains can help by producing uplifting, relaxing, euphoric or productive effects. Many have various healing benefits that can help with chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety and more common ailments. Check all labels and make sure you know the type of cannabis you are consuming.

Typically, duration for inhalation may span from 30-90 minutes.

POTENCY AND PSYCHOACTIVE EFFECT

As we said above, potency will vary by strain. For instance, a strain like Blue Dream will have a different effect than CBD Critical Mass. Why? Because each strain has a different chemical combination of cannabinoids and terpenes that give them their unique qualities of smell, aroma and effect. This is what is known as the entourage effect. The entourage effect is the benefit you get from ingesting multiple components of the cannabis plant (such as cannabinoids like THC and CBD) together instead of ingesting one component at a time.

Israeli researcher, Raphael Mechoulam first coined the phrase in 1999, referring to his belief that cannabis compounds provide the most therapeutic relief when they integrate. Studies have since proven him right. We now know that while THC binds to brain receptors and gives patients a psychoactive side effect, CBD binds to the body receptors and in large enough quantities, effectively counteracts this effect.

Blue Dream is a sativa-dominant strain with about 18-22% THC and loaded with beta-myrcene, alpha-pinene and limonene terpenes. This strain will be more euphoric and uplifting. While CBD Critical Mass is an indica-dominant strain, with 8-10% CBD and 5-7% THC and loaded with beta-caryophyllene, trans-nerolidol, and linalool terpenes. A strain like this will be more relaxing and help with sleep. The best way to know which strain is best for you is to experiment. Try one strain and see how you feel. Document the effects. Try another strain later or the next day. This will help you monitor how you feel when you consume different strains.

Symptom Relief

Again, symptom relief will vary by strain and dose. But consumers who like to inhale will feel an effect immediately. For Blue Dream, consumers may get relief from anxiety, chronic pain, depression, fatigue and headaches. With CBD Critical Mass, many may get relief from chronic pain and headaches, as well. Along with inflammation, insomnia and lack of appetite.
