Purpose and scope of Position

The Extraction Operations Manager (EOM) is responsible for establishing and managing the production and supply of consistent, safe, quality concentrates and extracted products to be sold throughout the state at WCM and WCM’s wholesale customers’ retail locations. The EOM will work in conjunction with the Product Manager (PM) and Director of Production Operations (DPO) to ensure the proper product mix and quantities are being produced appropriately. The EOM must maintain full compliance with Maine Medical & Adult Use marijuana regulations, and OSHA regulations.

Principal Duties:

1. Day-to-day management of Extraction area and team including but not limited to: production scheduling, execution, staffing, and capacity planning

a. Directly responsible for daily supervision of the Extraction Team

b. Leads and motivates team members

c. Establish appropriate processes and procedures for efficient workflow within current extraction facility

d. Update layout and design of extraction space as needed to maximize workflow efficiency

e. Provide training to Extraction staff on operational standards as necessary to maintain consistency and uniformity

f. Maintains at all times a safe, clean, and sanitary environment inside the extraction and post-extraction laboratory

g. Enforces WCM safety policies and procedures

h. Schedules the Extraction Team’s weekly workload to ensure production and development goals are met simultaneously

i. Oversees the completion of daily tasks

j. Responsible for maintenance of extraction related equipment and reaching out to the Maintenance Manager when needed

k. Ensures equipment, materials and supplies are on hand and set up prior to each shift

l. Ensures that all tracking information is updated and accurate

m. Routinely inspects each batch for quality control and follows testing procedures in collaboration with the Lab Technician

n. Act as a host and/or participate in audits/inspections by internal auditors and external auditors

2. Produce and supply the WCM/High North product assortment to meet retail demand

a. Monitor and maintain agreed upon finished goods inventory levels to ensure ample supply for both retail and wholesale availability

b. Monitor packaging supplies and place orders as necessary to ensure availability at all times

c. Forecast needs for cannabis derived oils and coordinate with Kitchen Operations Manager to ensure sufficient supply of medicated ingredients are on hand at all times

d. In conjunction with the PM and DPO, oversee the development of product concepts to create a balanced and diverse portfolio of concentrates

e. Ensure accurate processing, packaging and labeling for entire concentrate product line according to agreed product specifications and supply forecasts

f. Manage the safe and secure handling of the cannabis and all products containing cannabis throughout transportation and production workflows

3. Effectively lead and manage the Extraction Team to realize high quality product results, efficient workflows and motivated staff

a. Staff scheduling

b. Writing and delivering performance reviews

c. Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) whenever a new product and/or piece of equipment is introduced

d. Maintain and update SOPs for every process performed in the lab

e. Perform periodic assessments to ensure all SOPs are being followed

f. Recruit, train, and define roles where needed

g. Provide technical guidance and training in an effort to have a well-rounded staff with built in redundancy

4. Manage the Extraction lab work environment to optimize efficiency, accuracy and quality of the cannabis products while ensuring full compliance with Maine medical and adult use marijuana regulations

a. Coordinate with the Manager of Product Innovation & Quality (MPIQ) to conduct regular testing of all products produced in-house to ensure accuracy and consistency of finished goods

b. Ensure that all equipment remains in good working order – extraction/refinement equipment, cart fillers, scales, work stations, etc.

c. Coordinate with the WCM Facility Maintenance team to schedule equipment repairs in a timely fashion

d. Develop plans to scale up production as demand/forecasting requires

e. Ensure consistency and efficiency of product through quality control testing and procedures

f. Maintain strict inventory records; including all extracted oil, plant material, extraction solvents, chemicals, and equipment.

g. Direct and implement operation, maintenance, cleaning, adjustment and repairs of extraction equipment

h. Oversee storage of solvents, supplies and equipment and disposal of waste according to guidelines

i. Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of all processes and noting any changes/anomalies

Administrative Duties

  • Ensure compliance with all Maine State rules and regulations as well as other applicable rules for the handling of WCM products

a. Keep and manage all required compliance records related to cannabis feedstock and products containing cannabis

b. Interface with other company departments and functions to ensure accurate compliance and record keeping

c. Ensure proper labeling, logging, and tracking of all medicated ingredients and finished goods

  • Communication – effective, efficient, collaborative across all functional teams to ensure learning, sharing, and reapplying

a. Supervisor – strategy and approvals, weekly status meeting and reports

b. Colleagues – regular recurring meetings with the Product Manager, Inventory Associate, Processing Manager, Manager of Product Innovation and Quality, Logistics Manager, and DPO

c. Company in general – proactive approach to product development, company growth, and knowledge of the industry

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or related sciences or equivalent experience

· Will consider applicants with relevant job experience in lieu of education

Work Experience Required

  • Experience working in high volume production environment
  • A minimum of 3+ years of experience in extraction processes in a lab that adheres to strict health and safety policies and procedures – preferably in a cannabis environment
  • Work history showing progressive responsibility, flexibility, willingness to accept additional projects or challenges, ability to supervise and develop staff

Required Knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of research and development processes
  • Knowledge of Maine state law governing medical and adult use marijuana not a requirement, but must demonstrate a willingness to learn

Physical Requirements

  • Extended time standing, walking, bending, and reaching
  • This position occasionally requires the extended and repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for a distance of 100 feet
  • Must have a Maine state driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Must pass a state-mandated criminal background check and drug test

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 – $80,000.00 per year
